Car Rental Guide - Great Information About Car Rental in New Zealand

Helping you find Car Rental companies in New Zealand

Driving in New Zealand

New Zealand has an amazing array of scenery on offer as you drive through out the country. It is important not to underestimate driving times. Distances may seem short, however, the roads often include hilly or winding terrain, which slows down your journey.

Hiring a Vehicle in New Zealand

You may legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months with a current driver’s licence from your home country or with an international driving permit (IDP). If your licence is not in English, you should bring an English translation with you, or obtain an IDP, as rental car companies may require this.

Some Basic Safety Rules to Remember
* Motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road.
* Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times.
* When turning left, give way (yield) to traffic crossing or approaching from your right.
* When the traffic light is red, you must stop. There is no left turn rule as in North America.
* Do not drink alcohol before driving – New Zealand drinking and driving laws are strictly enforced.
* Cycling is not permitted on motorways.

For further information on the New Zealand road code and general motoring rules visit Land Transport Safety Authority's web site.
